Breast augmentation surgery is the process of increasing breast volume with breast prostheses placed under the breast tissue or under the muscle tissue. This procedure can be applied to structurally small breasts, asymmetries and size differences, or post-birth shrunk and deflated breasts.
After the examination for breast augmentation, the plastic surgeon determines and informs the patient about other variables that affect the decisions about the operation, such as the skin that covers the chest, the presence of breast tissue, volume, whether it is saggy, whether there is mass, and the condition of the breasts. In cases where the breasts are obviously sagging, the plastic surgeon may also recommend a method that reduces and reshapes the breast skin, namely a breast lift operation.

There are different surgical approaches to breast augmentation. The most commonly used technique is the incision made in the inframammary fold, which is slightly above the area where the lower part of the breast meets the chest wall. This area is the best entrance incision where the surgical field can be best visualized and bleeding can be easily controlled, the scar is not visible when standing, and the scar takes on the same color as the skin.
Decision about the desired breast size to be created.
One of the most important questions for patients undergoing breast augmentation surgery is deciding on the size of the desired breast. Patients who apply for aesthetic breast augmentation surgery usually have difficulty describing the size of the breast they want to achieve. They often mention the bra size and cup size they desire.
The plastic surgeon should understand the patient’s desires, listen to their expectations, take body measurements, and select the size of the breast implants according to their own body measurements. After examining our patients and understanding their expectations, we determine the dimensions that could be suitable for them. Before the operation, silicone implants can be brought to the hospital in multiple sizes and options, not in a single size, so that all silicone implants we need for the operation are available.
We also have trial implants, called “sizers,” brought into the operating room. During the operation, we first insert the sizer implant. If this size does not create the desired size, we place a larger or smaller silicone implant accordingly. Thus, through the trial-and-error method, we achieve the size that our patients desire. After determining the desired size, we put the original implants on the patient, and based on the measurements and evaluations, make the right decision during the operation with the “sizer silicone.”
After a breast augmentation surgery
Breast augmentation surgery typically takes about 1-3 hours, depending on the complexity of the procedure and whether any asymmetries need to be corrected. Following the surgery, a small dressing is applied to the breasts and a compression bra is worn to help minimize swelling and promote proper healing. Any mild pain or discomfort can be managed with medication and typically subsides within the first day or two.
Over the course of the next week, swelling will gradually decrease and the breast tissue will soften and settle into its new shape. The newly formed inframammary fold will begin to look more natural, creating a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.
